Another Sunday Morning
Sunday July 25th @ 10:30 AM - The
King House.
She watches her grandson pacing back and forth. He's been doing
it
for the last 15 minutes. He looks different this morning. Normally, a
quiet boy but a confidant one, his face is full of worry. She can sense
the he has things on his mind. "TK come and sit with me." TK with his
mind on other things, is startled to hear her voice. But he looks
around, then goes and sits next to her., on the porch swing. "Take a
break, Grams?" "Yes, it's hot in that kitchen. ... I noticed you have
this long face on this morning, are you having second thoughts about
inviting you friend?"
"I don't know, Grams. I'm sorta worried about it. ... You
see ... I
really like him alot. ... But he's had a lot of crap thrown at him
lately, ... What if I was just a sympathetic shoulder to cry on? ...
What if I'm getting carried away and just setting myself to get fu...
to get screw... what if I'm setting my self for a big nothing?" He
fiddles with his hands as he talks. "Grams, this is all crazy. ... We
only really kissed each other. ..." His voices lowers as he is speaking
with an almost reverential tone to his word. "... It's just that one
night when he asked me to just hold him. ... I ... I ... felt so
important, so strong. ... like I could battle the world for him. ...
Grams it's been a week,.... okay six days, since I saw him last. ..."
TK starts smiling then loses it. "There was a big joke last
weekend, where Gary and CJ, that's Bill's cousin, decided to play
matchmaker, so they threw us together. When I saw him the first time, I
thought that the joke's on them." He turns to face his grandmother, "If
this bothers you I can understand. .. We can talk about something else."
She smiles at him now, "No that's alright, TK. You can talk to me about
anything. Just why are you so worried? If he didn't like you would he
becoming all that way today?" "Grams, it's just I never liked anyone
like this before. ... The neatest thing about this, is that he makes me
feel good about myself. ... I know I'm somebody now, nobody can take
that away."
Just then a van pulls up in front of the house. TK
turns when he
hears Bill shouting, "TK We're here." Bill jumps out of the van and
heads for TK. They rush toward each other. When they meet, so do their
lips. TK isn't worried anymore. They break into laughter from the
relieve, and Bill's Aunt Jean and his cousin, Gina join them while Grams
is heard calling all the family, "Company here, Come on out."
Betty comes out from the kitchen, Zack and Shelley come around
from
the back of the house where they're setting up the tables, When Steve
and Mark have yet to make an appearance, Grams yells up to them. "Steve,
Mark come on down we have visitors." Knowing that there is nothing to be
gained by arguing with Virg, they come down the back stairs.
Bill immediately says hello to Zack and Shelley. While the rest
gather around. "Grams, Mom, this is Mrs. Wright. "Make than just Jean"
"This is Bill, he's come to visit for a couple of weeks. " Shelley in a
loud stage whisper, says "This is the guy TK's been drooling about all
week." TK feels like crawling into a hole, while Bill's face is
swallowed up in a huge grin. "Shelley!!! Cut that out. Can't take you
anyplace!" "Teasing TK , Shelley earns daggers from his eyes, "What's
the matter TK, you hiding stuff from your BOYfriend." Bill walks over to
Grams and TK's mom, "Hi , I'm Bill and it seems I'm TK's boyfriend."
Grams gives a hug, while TK's mom, holds his hand, "Welcome to our
home."
Virg and Betty sit down with Jean on the verandah, sending
TK and
Bill to bring out some beverages. Gina joins Shelly and Zack in the back
setting up for the picnic. Steve and Mark head back up to their
'apartment.' They figure with another half of an hour work they can be
done with 'their' bedroom. Jean says to Virg and Betty, "Sorry to be a
bother, what with your picnic, but Bill has had it rough recently, and
if you will forgive me, I just wanted to check out into whose hands I'm
entrusting my new son." Betty answers, "Bill seems to be a fine boy, ...
Did you say new son?"
"Yes, the courts have granted my husband and I, at least
temporarily, legal guardianship on Friday. He's our boy now. ... I will
never be able to forgive or forget how my ass of a brother and his
mindless wife could be so cruel to Bill. My heart breaks when I will
catch Bill staring at some old picture of them, with tears in his eyes."
Jean stands by the railing that borders the verandah, "Then all week
long he's been moping about the house, talking of TK this, TK that, when
is TK going to mail him. So yesterday, when he got an invitation to come
here, he seemed to literally glow with excitement. There is no way I
could have said no. I just don't want him to get hurt, again. ... So
this might sound a little strange but do you know what TK's intentions
are?"
"From what he's mentioned to me," Virg says,
"I have the feeling
that this is his first serious crush, he acts if he was in love with
your boy. It seems every time you talk to him the conversation ends in
Bill. ... By the way, where are those boys, it doesn't take this
long to fetch a pitcher and some glasses. ... TK where are
you?" TK
and Bill were standing in front of a tray of lemonade with five glasses
of ice. But the refreshments are far from their mind, as they hold each
other tight with both of them concentrating on kissing practice. Virg's
call breaks their reverie, and Bill says, "Not bad, but you are going to
need a lot more practice."
